The leaves are slightly yellowed and have some brown blotches, there are signs of new growth.
This bush is in a large tub.
Any advice would be welcome.
My Camelia bush has not flowered this year.?
The soil has become too limey. The plant is sufferring from clirosthus (lack of iron)making the leaves yellow and poor flower bud production.Take the entire plant out of the pot, completely shake out all soil from roots, remove soil from pot.Add ericacious(acid)compost 90% to 10% soil and replant. The new leaves will be green and in august it will make many flower buds.Tap water is very limey,so use rainwater or repot with fresh acid compost every second year
Reply:I think you have two things going on here. The leaves have most likely been hit by the frost. Wet weather followed by frosts does not do them any favours.
The lack of flowers can be caused by a number of things. Yes they can be nipped in the bud (so to speak) by late frosts especially if sunlight is hitting them whilst still frozen but they may not have formed at all.
If the plant dries out when flower buds are being formed in late summer, growth is interrupted. This results in no flowers being formed or buds dropping off just before they are due to open.
Excessive feeding. This can encourage soft, lush growth that doesn’t ripen enough to form flowers, particularly if nitrogen fertilisers are used.
Hopefully some of that is of use to you. Heres hoping for flowers next year! :)
Reply:Yellowing leaves on a camellia is a sign of chlorisis which basically is an iron deficiency.
Take the shrub out of the pot and remove as much soil as possible from the roots without causing any damage.
Re pot using an ericaceous compost. Water in some sequestrine and feed with a compound fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure or growmore.
Ensure the shrub has enough water particularly during August and September when it is setting flower buds for the following year.
Reply:sounds like cold damage. it may need some warmer temps to bloom juts wait a little. plants in tubs outside get more damage than ones in the ground.
is this is an indoor plant water less and keep it cool in the spring because that promotes flowers.
Reply:Camelias do like some fertilizer every year. You should get some that is specifically for azaleas and camelias.
Reply:Don't worry, sometimes nature needs a break. This year could be it's rest year.
Reply:i think it will more space. a tub is too small. stick it into a garden plot. feed and water. good luck
