i have a camelia plant and its not doing well. it was planted in the ground but the leaves were changing colors nad it had barely any leaves and the buds never bloomed they died before it bloomed. i dont know what i did wrong. the plant is only 4 feet tall or so. it doesnt seemed like it has grown at all. but i did read that they are slow growers. well i 2 of them and one died nad the other i am trying to bring it back. i planted it in a pot so i can make it healthy again and replant it. it has only a few leaves some of the leaves are getting better the leaves are silky looking asnd smooth compared to the ones that look rough and discolored with different shades of brown. i have read coffee grounds is a great fertilizer for it is it true?? what should i do put the plant in the full sun or partial or what. and what else should i do. i live in north florida.
I have a camelia tree and i dont know where to put it?
Most importantly plant in acid soil, not clay, in partially shaded location. Plant where morning sun can't get to it as the sun will damage frosted blooms..
Reply:Partial sun is best. My red camelia is in a 15 gallon container where it gets a couple of hours of late morning sun. This spring it had the hugest most gorgeous bright red flowers!
I do not use any chemical fertilizers.. as mentioned I use coffee grounds. Camelias are like rhododendron and azaleas, they like well drained acidic soil and a little bit of sunshine.
Reply:Because of their shallow root system, they are susceptible to drought damage and should be watered deeply on a regular basis. If the plants are left too dry over a long period, buds will drop before they have a chance to open.

Reply:if the lwaves are brown the sun is burning them.i would put it in parcial shade and give it some real fertilizer that will help your tree along very well.give it fertilizer every 2 weeks you can buy it at the hardware store.it is not exspensive and worth the saving of your tree.
Reply:Ok... well your camellia plants should be put in partial shade/sun. We had camelllia plants in our yard that were at least 40 years old. Now and then you need to prune them back and also they require an oil spray at least once a year to prevent the mold as they do prefer a partial shade. Coffee grounds are good as a compost but I never put the straight grounds around my plants. A good turned up soil around the plant and then mulch to keep the soil from drying out. If you live in northern Florida your soil must be a mix of sand, clay. Try adding some good black topsoil.
